What a feeling!

There are cities on this earth that leave a mark on people. Americans think Paris as the city of their dreams. St.Petersburg, Prague, Wien, Sydney, New York...just to mention few others that burn mark themselves on the memory of the visitor. When remembering back those cities, they still manage to create a tingling feeling. What a place, what a time!

Nobody mentions Dhaka ever, when speaking of memorable places. I dont wonder that. After all, if our earth was shaped like a human, Dhaka would be located somewhere between the buttocks. Yes, its a shithole.

But certainly Dhaka doesnt leave anybody cold. Walking on the street in Dhaka makes the feelings go up and down like a rollercoaster.

You can meet a person lying on the street corner begging for money with all four limbs amputated . Down. Then you walk further and you see young children's eyes getting bigger from bewilderment when they see a white person. You wave them and they start smiling, laughing and waving back. Up. Then you almost get hit by a car, scooter, bus, truck or a rickshaw. HONK HONK! Down. Then some stranger comes to you and wants to shake your hand and say few words in English. Up. Then you feel like getting ripped off at the shop, but there is nothing you can do. Down. Then some brick layers want they picture taken. They pose and are so happy when they see the result. Up.

There are times when leaving the house is too much to ask. Then some days its the best thing that can happen. Going to see the people. Sometimes again homesickness takes over. Then again, its great to be here!

Get the point?

Schizophrenic.

Interesting facts

Did you know that Bangladeshi goverment was offered a submarine high speed cabel free of charge back in 1999? The goverment turned the offer down. You might wonder why would anybody do such thing?

Its all about corruption. If somebody gets something for free, then there are no "bakshees" (bribes) to give out to anybody.

That is why my "fraudband" connection is slower than a snail on tar.

Next July Bangladesh finally joins the telecommunications backbone network. After paying nearly 100 000 000 000 Takas. That ensures that every dirty politician and all the middle hands will get their share.
